Meet Our Founder

“Every child should have the opportunity to see themselves reflected in the pages of a book, to see their culture celebrated, and to envision themselves as the hero of their own incredible story.”

Valerie J. Lewis Coleman

Founder & Visionary

As an advocate for diversity in children’s literature, Valerie recognized the crucial need for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) children to see themselves represented as protagonists in the stories they read. BIPOC is an inclusive term that encompasses the diverse experiences and backgrounds of marginalized communities. Through the When I See Me™ Children’s Book Fair, she’s creating opportunities for young readers to connect with characters who look like them and share their experiences.
